How many of us are familiar with the "Kitty Bobo Show" pilot episode? I just remember about it this third week of June. I blurted my love for the cartoon to my sister while we were talking about something else that was remotely related to the show.
The pilot for the "Kitty Bobo Show" was created by Kevin Kaliher and is written by Meghan Dunn-Kaliher for Cartoon Network back in 2001. It was one of the pilot episodes that joined the CN Summer Big Pick, a special that features countless cartoon pilots. Viewers will have to vote what they want to turn into a series on the TV network.
The story of the pilot episode is about a young male cat named Kitty Bobo who loves to shows-off his brand new cellphone to everybody he knows. His friends don’t have one and even the coolest cat in the neighborhood only uses the payphone. They are annoyed by his showing off and they express that they don't care he has a cellphone.
Because he doesn't know anyone that has a cellphone, he doesn’t get any calls so he just makes them up. It isn't long until the other characters catch up with the farce. In the end, he loses the gadget. And on the next day, all of his friends now have cellphones of their own.
The animation is unique and simple, and the story of the pilot was universally fitting for all ages. The obsession of being "cool" is universal, and the jokes are amusing without being exaggerated like most cartoons.
Kevin Kaliher's inspiration for the pilot is his own life story. He conceived this story while he was looking for his birth family in Korea. Kitty Bobo has dogs for parents which reflects Kaliher's own life because he was adopted by Americans.
So again, the Kitty Bobo Show was featured in the Cartoon Network's Big Pick. And the show that got the most votes will be turned into a series. Unfortunately, for all the viewers who voted for KBBS, it only landed in second place. The winner was Kids Next Door (renamed Codename: Kids Next Door) and it’s all about a bunch of kids who are always in war with evil adults.
However, the story of Kitty Bobo and friends doesn't stop here. This year 2009, and by public demand, the creators of this wonderful cartoon are now working on a web series. Fans will just have to wait to see.
